Be Like The Squirrels!

I'm sitting at my desk watching the squirrels in my backyard getting ready for winter. They are collecting nuts and seeds and burying them in the flowerbeds and in the trees. They are spending time now, before it gets cold and snowy to be prepared.
For small business owners, it's also a time of year when we start to think about getting prepared for the coming year. As business slows down after Thanksgiving, it's a great time to begin to gather up all of your important documents and business information and get organized. There are many reasons why we don't get organized:
- We don't know where to start gathering up information.
- We think getting organized will take a lot of time.
- We believe its a lot of work to get organized for something that may not be necessary.
Here are some reasons why you might want to consider getting organized:
1. You are likely the only person who knows everything about your small business. The information is locked in your head so if something happens to you, e.g., an accident, illness or natural disaster, your business is likely to fail. That can be disastrous to your family and clients.
2. You probably are wasting a lot of time searching for critical business information because it is not filed correctly or is in a stack of paper on your desk or floor, or hidden away in a drawer or file cabinet.
3. You are doing it all yourself! If you want to hire an administrative assistant or other employee, it will take you a lot of time to gather the information they will need to be of actual help in your business. Being organized means you can share the "right" information in a timely manner.
4. Having the information organized can help you strategically plan for the coming year. Having the right information at your fingertips can help you make better business decisions.
